Looking For A Running Partner?

Layla
Layla is a beautiful 1 1/2 year old Lab/Weimaraner mix.

This sweet girl has lots of energy and would love to go on walks or runs with you. She knows tricks like sit, shake, down, and roll over.

Layla is good with kids and seems to like other dogs. She is completely house and crate trained. She only chews her toys and is not a barker, unless she wants to be let out. She can jump a chain link fence so a privacy fence would be best. She is spayed and up to date on vaccines.

Our adoption fee is $200.00 (cash only).

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3. Come up and meet this cutie!

Rocco needs someone with a big heart!

Rocco is a special needs pet, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and good with cats.

Rocco was turned in by his owner when she moved. She had kept up on some of his vaccines, but failed to provide him with basic heartworm prevention. So now seven year old Rocco is suffering through the treatment he needs to save his life, while living in a shelter, after being abandoned by his former owner. Rocco has our volunteers to look after him and make sure he gets the treatment he needs... but he really needs a responsible home of his own now.

He is such a sweet boy and needs to be kept quiet during this treatment. He is looking forward to being able to run and play when this is over.

Adoption fee: $95 (cash only) this includes spay/neuter, first distemper vaccine. Rabies vaccine & heartworm test if old enough.

Hours for Adoptions:

Monday, Tuesday & Friday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

Maria has Special Needs (Felv and FIV+)

Maria is a quiet cat who is very low maintenance. She is not one to jump on the furniture and has to be invited up before she will. Found as a stray with her babies, she is a great mom cat and still takes care of her babies. She is very loving and such an easy cat to have around. She does enjoy her food and is getting a bit chubby. It shows Maria still has a healthy appetite.

Please feel free to email Maria's foster mom with any questions. Felv can be a bit overwhelming.

Felv+ cats life span averages 3 years although some can live much longer. It does reduce their immune system so they are more prone to colds, infections, etc. FIV is a much easier disease to deal with and is not as contagious as Felv. Our Felv positive cats cannot be adopted to a home with Felv negative cats.

Email for questions or an application to adopt: wyan.dogpark@hotmail.com

All Shelter to Home animals are fully vetted per their age. We believe in pediatric spay and neutering. All animals will be spayed or neutered, tested for FIV/FeLV, given age appropriate boosters and rabies, dewormed, flea treated, and anything extra that is needed to give this feline a wonderful forever life in a permanent home.

Foster Friday - The Loss of Lola and Who Cares?

We lost Lola this past Wednesday to Feline Leukemia. She simply was one of the coolest cats with such a humorous personality. Having fun and being goofy was always a priority to her. RIP little rock star, we will miss you.

I use the term "We" because although she lived at my house for a while, there is a network of people who care and helped along the way. Some of these people actually met her, some did not. I have realized that she could not have been given these six months of life without every single person that is involved in rescuing the homeless animals of Downriver. We all play a part and all the "parts" are important. So thank you to those who take a bit of time out of their day to walk a shelter dog, to pet a shelter cat, to fund raise, to do the banking, to transport animals, to clean, to groom, to donate, to care.

If you are not yet involved and have been thinking of volunteering in some way, I urge you to call your local shelter to learn more about the help they need. It's time to make a difference and because you have read this, You Care.

Crystal had no one to take her in

Crystal is a calm, gentle and sweet gal around 3-4 years old. She is a Lynx Point colorpoint (Siamese) with beautiful blue eyes that are slightly crossed. She has an incredibly soft coat and she'll let you run your fingers through it all you'd like!

Crystal lost her home when her owner passed away and there was no one to take her in.
She is shy and takes a while to come around, but when she does, she is such a lover! She loves having her head and face rubbed and rolls over for belly rubs too! She likes to lay in bed or on a soft pillow and "knead" while she purrs and purrs.
Crystal has lived with other cats her whole life and she is the submissive one in her foster group. She doesn't fuss, even when the grumpy cat wakes her up and makes her move! What a gentle soul.

Adoption Donation is $100. Contact Foster Mom Judy at jrock0828@yahoo.com for an application today! We pride ourselves in contact with potential adopters within 24 hours so you won't be left waiting.

Carmen Likes Children!

Love is a rebellious bird
that nobody can tame,
and you call him quite in vain
if it suits him not to come.

Her adoption fee is $100, which goes to help defray medical expenses. Please contact her foster mom at cargirl3000@gmail.com for an application!

Foster Friday - It's Wise to Sterilize!

And so it begins...the cutest time of year when all the homeless and not homeless cats are getting pregnant...oh, how cute...and then giving birth...and then oh, these kittens are so, so, so cute!

UG.

My guess is you know someone who has said something like:

1. It’s better to let a female have one litter before spaying
2. I want my children to experience the miracle of birth
3. You don’t need to sterilize the males, only the females
4. My pet is a purebred
5. Spayed / Neutered pets are fat and lazy
6. I can find good homes for all my kittens
7. Spaying and neutering is expensive

...and these people are idiots.

Unfortunately, there is an ugly truth about this time of year that most people don't see or know about. It's an overwhelming (and I mean waaaaaaayyyyy overwhelming) overpopulation problem at all the shelters and rescues. It's called 'kitten season' and although yes, they really are cute, as all babies are, there are just way too many of them.

Kittens don't do well in a shelter environment, their immune systems are not strong enough to fight off infections. Very young kittens without mom cats need monitoring and sometimes bottle feeding. Face it, they are babies, little tiny babies that need someone to care for and watch over them and that includes cleaning their bum sometimes. Kittens with a mom cat fair better in a quieter place as shelters are busy and sometimes noisy. These poor mom cats have enough to worry about caring for their young, they need our help too. I know all you moms out there can agree :)

Downriver alone experiences hundreds, maybe thousands of kittens turned into our shelters every year. The Wyandotte Shelter alone took in 220 kittens last year AND the consolidation did not start until April. That means, statistically speaking, we will surpass that number this year. But our resources are limited; food, vet bills, quiet places for them to grow and be healthy are always in demand. Oh, and did I mention the need for potential adopters?

So how can you help?

  • Speak up! That neighbor or friend of a friend who lets their cat have litters, tell them it's not helping and that they are part of the problem.
  • Spay and neuter your pets.
  • Donate to your local shelter, every little bit counts.
  • Become a foster. It's fun and it feels good.

Contact your local shelter for more information on how you can get involved. Thanks for visiting today.

Penelope's Special Needs, Make Her Especially Unique!

Penelope
Our beautiful 4 year old Penelope has Cerebeller Hypoplasia, which causes jerky movements, tremors and generally uncoordinated motion. This sweetie can still live a long healthy life and she is in no pain what so ever.

Carpeted floors would be best for her as well as a ranch style home as she cannot go up or down stairs. She cannot jump up on couches or a bed nor pull herself up on them because her previous owner declawed her.

Penelope is a very loving girl and beautiful too! She is so sweet and her walk is very cute!

It's time for this sweet girl to find her forever family, somewhere where she will be spoiled rotten and doted upon. She requires weekly brushing because she has long hair and it's hard for her to groom her back, she falls over when she tries to reach too far. She is house trained, spayed, declawed and current on all shots.

Our Beautiful Blue-Eyed Koko

Koko is a sweet, handsome fella with gorgeous eyes!

He is a very smart boy and is familiar with the commands sit, high five, shake, lay down and night night (for going in his crate). He is house trained and lets you know when he wants to go outside.

This boy is strong and has LOTS of energy, so a home with another dog to play with would be beneficial and no small children.

Since KoKo came to us as a result of his ability to scale fences with no problem, it is imperative that he go to a home with a full privacy fence. Additionally when he is let outside, he should go out on a tie down.

Koko has been temperament tested at the shelter and he passed! He will be neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped.

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3. Come up and meet this cutie.

Foster Friday - Discovering a Ray of Hope

Emily
What a week! So I could tell you all about the antics that have been going on, like Charlotte learning from Joan how to climb the cross bars in the ceiling. How as I sat there having my morning cup of coffee, she lost her balance and turned into the 'Hang In There' kitty of posters past (no worries, although I am slow in the mornings, I can be quick to help when needed). Or how Emily, the beautiful, demure, elegant one turns into a lightning quick, ball of fury, trample over all in her way, no rules apply monster kitty when I pull out the laser pointer.

BUT...

This week has given me and the fosters a whole new perspective. Information can be powerful and living proof is better yet. After a long struggle of deciding, do I take them to a sanctuary, (Huge shout out to Leuk's Landing!) or do I make my house a sanctuary for who knows how many years, to these young kittens who have already been with me for months and of course, have won many a heart, including mine? I finally made the decision last Monday night that Leuk's would be better for them (vino and tears included).

AHEM...

Not so happily at work on Tuesday morning, lol, I get a facebook message from Katie, a volunteer from WAC. "Did you see this?"
  • Basil's Buddies
We have some exciting news and proof that there is hope for FeLV+ cats! Echo was rescued by his foster mom and dad but he tested positive for FeLV. Thanks to Cahill Veterinary Hospital and Dr. Greear they were given an option to try T-Cyte, a new treatment for FeLV. After 4 months of treatment we are thrilled to announce it worked! Echo is now FeLV NEGATIVE and will soon be available for adoption! Check out his test results as proof! Thanks to his foster parents Julia and Gene for not giving up hope and for Dr. Greear for suggesting the treatment!
WHAT???? I had never heard of T-Cyte and needless to say, I had a hard time focusing on work for the next few hours. WOW! ...um, did I say WOW!?

So, my fosters are still here and are staying for a bit longer. We are looking into the cost of this (I hear it's expensive) and back to our normal day to day fun filled activities. Although we may not be able to afford treating all of the four legged kids, I am hoping maybe one or two can get this treatment.

It's kind of funny, I do see some of life's events as 'signs' of sorts. Little clues guiding you to the right path. Although I have a love/hate relationship with facebook, I will take a message that gives a ray of hope anytime, thanks Katie. Do I see T-Cyte fundraising in my future?

Say Hello To Jed!

Jed
Jed is roughly 1-2 years old. He is a very affectionate and loving guy that knows just how to work his magic.

When Jed isn't asking for attention from you, he is also content sitting in a window staring outside.

Jed gets along very well with other cats, and does well with dogs. He's fond of strangers, greets people at the door and also doesn't mind be handled (i.e. touched all over, pulled and cradled in your arms). All in all, he's a pretty sound cat that would probably do well in any household.

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3. Come up and meet this cutie.

A JuJu Bean Just In Time For Easter!

JuJu Bean
JuJu Bean is a 3 year old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) Mix and weighs about 40 pounds. She enjoys playing with her foster dog sisters, both inside and out and she loves going for walks.

JuJu is a special needs animal, as she suffers from a seizure disorder, but that does not affect her quality of life. Her current medications control her seizures fairly well and they are both less frequent and much less severe than they used to be.

JuJu Bean is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, micro-chipped, crate trained, housebroken, and on heart worm and flea preventative. JuJu must have a fenced yard.

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3. Come up and meet this cutie!

Foster Friday - Houdini and the Flying Wallendas

This is Joan, a.k.a. Houdini. How can a whopping six pounds of kitten at the ripe old age of six months figure out how to get out of the foster room in so many creative ways? This picture is her in the bathtub. Came home one day to find her there having a good ol' time, talking up a storm in her very Joan Jett like, little cat voice. After returning her to her designated area of the house, she always makes the mistake of performing her escape antics in front of me. Now, this make take a while as I think she is toying with me to see how long I will wait, especially, say, when I am working or scrubbing the kitchen floor. I always come to the same conclusion, she is sheer genius! Her last escape route was from the table to the window well (you know the old Michigan cinder block basements with the glass block windows?) to performing an amazing flying Wallendas act over the wood cross bars of the open ceiling to get to the laundry room which leads to what I term, general population. So, what is a foster mom to do? Hmmm, take down the table, right? Right? Wrong! Although I have not yet witnessed the new way she is breaking to freedom, my guess is she laughed at me taking down the table saying something to the effect of:

"I don't give a damn 'bout my reputation
You're living in the past, it's a new generation
A girl can do what she wants to do and that's what I'm gonna do"
-Joan Jett

So, the IFA test results came back (is the Feline Leukemia in the bone marrow or not?)....BOOOOO, yes, it is. Did we get our cat scratch post done last weekend? booooo, no, we didn't (and I partly blame Joan for that). But, the Felv+ cat family is doing well and having a good time. They are all on petfinder available for adoption but in the meantime, they have a foster mom that definitely enjoys having them around. Have a great week and come on back next Friday for more foster cat shenanigans!
