'Less Adoptable' really means 'Awesome', right?

There are two long time residents at the Wyandotte Animal Adoption Center who have been unlucky at finding their forever homes. Sometimes certain dogs get looked over time and again, no fault of their own. But long stays at the shelter can begin to wear on a dog and they can become depressed.

Diane Desrosiers, Certified Dog Trainer took notice of Bella and Brutus' predicaments and now, AAA Pet Services is sponsoring six week obedience training classes for the lucky adopters. The basic obedience classes are intended to teach the owner and dog the basic AKC dog training commands Heel, Sit, Stay, Come, Down, and the use of proper correction. These classes are also a great way for the owner and their new companion to bond and have some fun together.

Bella is a very sweet, young female dog who has had a series of inconsistent homes and owners in a very short period of time. She needs a committed and permanent home that is willing to put time into training her. She needs a dependable owner who is able to provide attention and rules so she knows how to behave. Bella walks well on a leash, she may pull a little but obeys basic commands. She has a nervous habit of taking the leash into her mouth but she does this mostly when coming out and going back into her cage. She has been walked with some of the other shelter dogs and did have a 'crush' on one of them, so a home with an already trained dog may benefit her, she can learn by example and get well needed exercise by playing together.

Brutus is known as the goof ball, a puppy in a big dog body. He loves to give hugs and kisses and he thinks meal time is the best time of the day! He pulls on the leash sometimes when being walked and needs to learn not to pull when he sees groundhogs, squirrels, etc. He would do best being the only dog and a volunteer reported that she had taken him into the cat room to see his reaction. Well, a cat swatted at him and he jumped 10 feet into the air. She reported "it was hilarious." Brutus is a strong dog and loves his toys, so plenty of play time would benefit him. He is very eager to please.

The shelter has had dogs before that have been long time residents; larger, stronger, wrong color or breed and maybe considered "Less Adoptable." We are also very lucky to have met the people who have adopted these dogs who now report that their shelter dogs are "Awesome".

Meet Max!

Max is a sweet and independent 4 year old male Shihtzu mix. He loves attention and affection!

He does well with other dogs and loves to go on walks. He is stubborn at times, when he doesn't want to do something and will let you know by growling. He has never bitten, he just likes to try to be in charge.

This sweet boy is crate and potty trained, but does tend to mark. We are hopeful that his recent neuter will assist in curbing this habit.

Max will need frequent grooming and a lot of care with cleaning his eyes. He is up to date on vaccines, neutered, microchipped and tested negative for heartworm disease.

Please consider this sweet boy as your new companion!

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3. Come up and meet this cutie!

Sweeet Darla Was Left Behind!

Darla is a very sweet girl who loves attention. She was left behind in an apartment with no one to care for her and now she has a second chance. When she wants attention she will perform for you with a petite pretty meow, a paw reaching for you, or a flip to show you her belly. She loves belly rubs. She will tell you that she is not done yet by pulling your arm with her paw.

She can be a little shy if there is a lot of activity or too many animals around her. She will go off and find a safe place away from the excitement. She will take some time to get used to her new home, but with a little patience she will come out of her shyness and be a wonderful pet. It may be that she wants to be the only cat or have a companion that is calm.

Adoption Donation is $100. Contact Vickie this STH animals foster mom at petlover61@wowway.com for an application today! We pride ourselves in contact with potential adopters within 24 hours so you won't be left waiting.

Beans is a Senior Looking for Love

Beans is a 15 year old, 4-paw declawed senior. He came from a home where his human had a lot of love to give. Sadly, she died and Beans ended up in the shelter. Four months later, he is still trying to figure out what happened to his life.

Upon his intake examination,he was determined to be quite underweight, likely due to his badly infected mouth inhibiting his ability to eat. His foster mom took him in for dental cleaning and examination; the vet subsequently removed 6 of his teeth.

Beans is feeling much better now. His appetite is returning, though he is stubbornly particular about which foods he likes. He still could stand to gain some weight. He loves to be brushed and combed, and his foster mom has never met a cat who loves belly rubs as much as he does. He loves playing with his soft toys and snuggling in his plushy blanket. And catnip. Lots of cat nip.

He gets along with other cats - after all, at his former home he had 29 brothers and sisters to play with! However, Beans does have special needs.

Beans' special need is that he is a geriatric fellow in Stage 2 of chronic kidney disease. He is supposed to eat a special low-protein, prescription food; however, he's a picky old man and so is currently enjoying Fancy Feast Mornings and Sheba pate. Because of his advanced age and known dental problems, his adopter must have the financial means to take Beans to the vet for an exam, including a dental, at least twice a year. This, combined with the cost of food and medication, can be quite expensive.

If you feel that you can give Beans a safe, loving home for his remaining years, please contact his foster mom at cargirl3000@gmail.com for an application . His adoption donation is $100. We pride ourselves in contacting potential adopters within 24 hours so you won't be left waiting!

Lucy is a Special Girl with Special Needs

Lucy was rescued with a horrific injury to her sides. She may have been attacked by a dog or coyote. She's a tough little kitty, so her sides have healed up and her fur has grown back.Unfortunately, that is not the only issue she is facing. Lucy has also had a few seizures.

She is on medication to control the seizures and is responding well. The drug itself is very inexpensive, and she takes it like a champ. She is gaining some weight and seems overall very happy. She was always a super loving cat, but has grown even more attentive to us and is rubbing on our legs all the time. She is talking to us now too, a very sweet and quiet meow when she wants more attention.

Lucy is just as sweet as can be. She loves to snuggle, lay on your lap, get pets and just be with you. She gets along with the other foster cats and even our small dog. You would think she would be afraid of the dog after what happened...but she loves her too! This precious soul is going to be a gift in someones life. She is a total joy to have around and I can not say one negative thing about her. Come meet her and you will see...and you will fall in love!!

If you would like to meet her we can set that up. Please email nascar_nut@ymail.com for more information or an adoption application. Her adoption donation is $100, which helps offset the vet care we give the animals. All Shelter to Home pets are tested for FELV/FIV, dewormed, flea treated/prevention, given distemper shots, rabies shot, are spayed/neutered, and anything else that they made need.

Cuddle Up With Chewy!

Chewy is a sweet, affectionate, and highly adaptable Chow Lab mix. She is completely blind and has a cleft nose but that does not slow her down a bit. Although she will bump into things occasionally, she quickly learned her new surroundings and within hours was even using the stairs. After very little guidance, she was even going outside by herself.

Chewy is 3 years old and house trained. She loves to go out and lay in the sun or listen to her foster as she works in the yard. She is always by her foster's side or laying at her feet.

This sweetie is very mild mannered and gets along with dogs, cats, men and women. Smaller children may be too rough for her, but a home with older children would be fine for sweet Chewy!

She loves to be outside and to go for walks but she needs some work on the leash. She also rides calmly in the car, enjoying having the windows down a bit.

Contradictive to her name, Chewy has shown no interest in chewing on anything, not even toys or bones. She is well socialized and shows no aggression.

Chewy will need a completely fenced yard. No apartments or condos. She would not do well in a house where she would be a lone for 8 hours a day. Chewy will make a great companion for a home ready to give her lots of love, which she will openly thank with plenty of love.

Chewy's adoption fee is $200.00 (cash or credit card)

This sweetheart will be at the Livonia PetSmart on Saturdays from 11-3 starting in August. Come up and meet this cutie!
